Ur: the soil

Everything until this moment
has been academic.

Scrape the dull metal against
the soil. Its blade sparks,
slight and sudden against the rock.
All of life: that one spark

but the shovel does not stop — or,
rather the arm that wields it.
Everything until this moment
has been academic.

Blossoms flutter to the wood
below, a patina
reflecting clouds as gray as age
or tears, or sea, or nothing.

Words curl and fall, wood shavings
below a work bench, or
out of a termite’s mouth. They have
the same discarded slur.

Words flutter down, ensnaring the lost
with a net of sound and flowers.
Petals tossed, white and pink and gold
before the dirt steals spring.

The blade sparks against a hidden rock.
All of life: that one spark,
bright then ash, like her eyes,
a hearth after the wood is spent.

Winter spread until reddened hands
pulled the sheet over her face.
Maybe the spark is there now, deep
in those eyes, closed, waiting

to feed the seeds, the green, heather
and thorn, the mottled eggs
of next spring’s songbirds. But for now
there is only the scrape.

The brown cover is pulled up now,
the flowers concealed beneath.
Everything until this moment
has been academic.

That’s a really nice poem, Jenne.

Got a question for you: We are setting up a new web site for TDB, and I’d like to feature some good links to blogs, etc. May I do so with yours – with snippets from latest posts? I’d muchly appreciate it, I really enjoy reading your blog, and I’m sure others will as well.

Needless to say, I’d appreciate reciprocal linking – but it’s perfectly ok if you don’t, I won’t freak or anything. LOL

Anyway, the new site URL is http://www.tuatha-de-brighid.org We’ve just started, really – self-hosting WP is a whole new experience. But getting there slowly but surely. πŸ™‚

    Blessings and cheers,
    Briar.

Huh, never mind about the RSS – I figured out how to do it without. So your blog is now part of our “Ye New Magic Book of Pagan-ish Blogs VI”, http://www.tuatha-de-brighid.org/ye-new-books-of-posts-and-blogs/ πŸ˜€

Hey- I don’t suppose I can scam you out of a poem or two or three, or maybe an article on general Druid-ish (or whatever) themes? Hey, you are a TDB member after all – and even if your weren’t I’d still ask. Cheers.
