Poem: Loose dogs

Huffing free and leashless they lumbered
hydrant to hydrant, raced the cars, knit
and purl across the road. O freedom!
O joy far from the clanging latch! Duty
unfettered in a barkless world, just
wandering, wondering house to house —
I know the feeling. Our cars crawled forward
and past the compact with its door flung wide
a blank-faced man scooping them back in —
